I discovering Celtic art while on holiday in Cornwall I was mesmerised by the cunning knots and spirals in the crosses and manuscripts of the Celts. The detail in the Book of Kells was so fine people believed it to be the work of angels. To think these great artists where part of the ancestral heritage of the British Isles provided a huge inspiration and a quest to know more..
While visiting the Alhambra in Spain and the palaces in Morocco and Portugal a door was opened into the world of Islamic art. Its as deep as Celtic art yet completely different and I wondered at the possibility of some kind of integration. My latest pieces have been exploring this idea.
The great flood written of in the bible has many corroborating stories from cultures all over the world. If this is true then a great civilisation and all its knowledge may have been scattered to the four winds. Could the ancient art forms of the Celts and the Arabic peoples have once have come from Atlantis? Its a tantalising thought and certainly their depth, beauty and splendour hint at another world.
